Week 6 — Critique session
Visual research
What are the main ideas emerging from your visual research (moodboards, photographs of location or drawings)? What do they speak about your location? The main idea of my place is jumping out of my comfort zone to overseas and study alone at the age of 15 years old, nostalgia, and the adatation of a new place. And i think wood grains could represent the idea of nature, that I cannot always see in my hometown, representing a new start of my life journey.
Experimentations
What are the main experimentations you have conducted so far? What are the ideas/concepts emerging from these experimentations? Narrow down to a minimum of three (include the images here). I have been conducting conceptual types so far by hand drawing and illustrator, and have been working on some letterform sketches with drawing the tree branches and wood grains so far relating to the elements of my location, using black ink pen and illustrator.
What are the main characteristics of your typefaces (one or more favourite selections)? The wood grain is the main character of the typeface, it represents the experience I have gone through there.
What are the improvements on the letter structure, skeleton or dressing up you are intended to conduct? I think I can make more adjustments and transformation about the dressings, maybe try not to just apply the nature elements, but go deeper and pecifically design it according to my mood and atmospheres about my location.
Literal transfers and conceptual ideas
What are the literal transfers of location identified on your typeface designs? Focus on details and try to explain in-depth decisions. I am going to go deeper on my own feeling about my place which is nostalgia and sense of belonging, moreover I am going to use fading effects to apply on my typefaces, maybe add some shadows or birds flying on the sky in it to reinforce the sense of belonging and memories of my location. I will also be working digitally for my typefaces designs as it is going to be more convenient to make changes and transformation by illustrator.
What are the abstract and conceptual ideas identified on your typeface designs? The ideas identified on my typeface design is based on my own feeling and memories I built in this location, was initially lacking of sense of belonging, like a bird was originally following a bunch of birds on the sky but then accidentally left them, then this bird desperately flew and flew and when she flew to Macleans Park, she found her teammates back, the sense of belonging,
How much do you know and can explain about your conceptual idea? Have you done some research about any area (or concept) that you want to investigate that informs your design? What are they or could be?
How can any of these conceptual ideas or literal transfers be transported into your publication design and poster design (in the use of layout, materials, colour and structure)? The conceptual idea is very useful for expressing my initial feeling and eventual feeling of this place, the effect of the birds fading letterform helped me to emphasis how I found this place very influential and memorable of my life, as it is a turning point throughout my journey in between my hometown and New Zealand.
First panorama experience in my bubble

This is my first panorama photo taken from Street view. I recognized that it would look better if I took this picture in daytime and with natural sunlight shining in my bedroom. It is not easy to take a high quality of panorama photo when I take it without a tripod, because I couldn’t avoid shaking my hand when I tried to turn around during the process. Next time I will definitely take a better photo with my tripod and in the afternoon, this is what I have learnt from the mistakes from this low quality of panorama photo lol😂…
3 sets of Typefaces 2

This is my second attempt of 3 sets of typefaces, at this time I narrowed the effects and diversification of the letterforms designs that I would like to work on. I decided not to continue to work on the cloud one from the previous 3 sets of designs and continued to work on the wood patterns and tree patterns. For the wood pattern one I played and tested with thicker and thinner strokes to see which one is better, and I found the one with thicker stroke works better because I think less white spaces in the stroke could be seen clearer. For the tree one I played with repeated patterns and it surprisingly looks awesome, however I found that the trunks are a bit annoying when it keeps repeating, maybe not adding the trunks would works better.👍🏻
Final refinement of my poem

Conceptual type/ Craft type moodboard
Conceptual type: I especially like the fourth on the first row with 26 letterforms, its style really matches with my location, Those letters are designed with the elements of woods and birds, which gave me a sense of freedom and nature as well. I also like the second left one on the first row “Fly”, the effects of the letters could relate quite well with my theme “Going overseas by myself to study alone”, I am inspired by the fading effects which could be used in my letterform designs.
Craft type: I actually find craft type gives me wider space of creating interesting letterforms because I could also use my hand to do experiments and tests with different materials, textures and three dimensionally. At first I thought of picking the grass or some rocks from the locations to make some letters, and I thought that might be a fun and creative idea of creating new letterforms.
Concrete poem 2

Opps.. Almost forgot to upload my second concrete poem on WordPress. This time I started to jump out of my comfort zone to create some “non-sense” images as last time you could clearly and straight away see that my design wasn’t as abstract as this time. This time also talking about the same thing which is a person who were to leave his own country to explore new things by himself. Books refer to studying, Trees refer to the natural environment of New Zealand and the interior image refer to his original home. He began his adventurous journey by riding the pigeon from his home country to a place where he has never been to.
Design 3 typefaces according to my location
First, I drew the skeletons of my 3 chosen letterforms. Then dressed them with the elements I picked which could represent my location, they are trees, wood patterns and clouds. I would say my favourite one is the wood pattern one, as wood patterns also refers to memories, experiences and age, wood is also a material that gives me the feeling of nostalgia, something with profound experience, and memorial. It was really interesting when trying to insert the elements from a place onto the letterforms, measuring the height, weight and the gap of the letters. These steps had allowed me to have deeper understand of designing letterforms thoroughly and decently.
