For my character design, Because my initial character was not matching with the background, so I redo another character for the game. The girl was too tall and the style is looking not as cartoon compared to the background, therefore, I drew another asian boy to replace her, making another international student player for the game.
Game design development
For my level design, I made my background larger and taller, to make avoid seeing too many frames when playing with the game.
Instead of duplicating the previous background with two rows, I have extended it to make it as one image, to make it easier to adjust in the game.
Then, I went back to illustrator to separate and save each of the characters and enemies, platforms to one files as I forgot to do it before moving everything to Unity.
And now I have drag and drop the png tools in it and ready for applying coding on them
Final publication layout and grids
Here is my final publication layout and design, I have finally decided to stick on my old grid as I mostly did illustration for my publication and the grid will be better to use on those pages with texts more.
Moreover, I decided to remove my bird concrete poem (it was originally at the page before the “Who am I” illustration page), because I think it looks too harsh and too busy there, two pages with purple background are just too much thing going on. Therefore I made another visual poem with letters “But now I am found” as to answer “I once was lost”.
I still think that I can improve more on leaving the white spaces and keep my publication cleaner and more simple, this is the thing that I think I really need to be careful of, no matter for my future assignments or for my career…
The overall theme and concepts for my publication are sense of belonging, searching for identity, and unity. My publication is a illustrated-type and storytelling publication, I hope you enjoying reading it and can sense the mood in it from my perspective!
Learning and challenges:
Made lots of mistakes during the process of making my posters, publication layout…etc
Always need to go back and redo and refine my ideas and designs until I finalise everything
-Struggled a lot when choosing the color palette
-Learnt that more search, efforts and patients are always needed during the process
-It is fun and interesting to see how all of our typefaces are created by different moods, feelings and themes.
-Things turned harder when we were not able to have lessons at south campus, no face to face tutorials.
Final posters layout

This is my final potential illustrations I can apply into my publication/ posters, I decided to make the shadow from black colour to dark purple colour, because the black colour looked too harsh and not quite matched with the background colours. It was a fun process of playing around with colours and keep making changes, because every time when I make changes I feel like I am gradually getting to where I want my things to look like.
I have also removed the black feathers on the fourth and fifth posters design as to avoid overlapping problems. I realised that black colour is actually so hard to be used accurately on any designs, it is more suitable to be used on designing black and white colour designs only.
Final publication front and back cover

In my final front and back covers, I decided to remove the birds on the letter “Y”, as there is too many overlapping going on which makes the cover looks messy.
For my back cover, I drew an illustration of me and three of my other friends make the “LOVE” letters as to show the unity of us and what they have given me.
Making the contrast of initially chasing the birds, searching for meanings and identity, to the end I have found it and had a good ending with my friends in my location.
Visual poem-final

“I once was lost, but now I am found”, this quote is to represent how I found my identity and my passion in my location through meeting my new friends in New Zealand there. By initially sitting alone, worrying about my future, then finding my identity and motivation with my friend at Macleans Park.
I have also just used maximum three different purple colour to show my ideas through my designed letterforms and illustration, as I have learnt that simplicity makes things better and can draw our focus better on one thing too.
Publication cover development

For my publication cover, I turned it from pointy shapes to curvy shapes, as the pointy shapes does not match with my other illustrations at all. And one problem Tatiana pointed out is that, the “Identity” title is overlapping with the background, the colour of the background and the title looks too similar as well, so these are the things that I will need to refine and make changes on.
I have also realised that it is fundamental to avoid using image trace as it illuminates the details of the originally image, so I decided to not using any image trace method to design my background.
So then I drew a new publication cover using the same elements from my previous cover (girl, birds, mountains, purple colour) and also I have created a queue of birds flying together using the letterform “Y” to show the unity of the birds relating to one of my concepts of my project.
Final cinemagraph

I have been to my place three times to take my final cinemagraph, and I realise that it is hard to freeze the background when it has the similar colour with the foreground objects. I have captured the moment of the teenagers playing with the swing, such a beautiful image!
For some reason it turns pixelated when exporting to a gif, maybe because of the website I have chosen to export Mov. to Gif.
One important thing I discovered about cinemagraph is that it can draw the force of our eyes really well, as there is only one focal point in the gif.
Final panorama

For my final panorama, I took many efforts of editing and cover the stitches on Photoshop, I have tried my best but the picture still have a little bit stitches on it.
I have also edited the saturation, colour, balence and brightness in Lightroom, to increase the vibrance of the picture.
This time I captured the moment of parents playing with kids, people jogging with dogs, and also teenagers playing with the swings in my panorama, I am glad that the weather was so nice and people are enjoying their time with their loved ones there too.
I used a tripod to take this pano and tried to move slowly, to avoid creating too many stitches and blurs in the photo.
My digital thumbnails of my posters
Here is my poster thumbnails/ design layout, without any colouring and just playing with the shading/ black and white spaces.
However, I realised that it is not a good idea to make my poster without colouring, as I have got a positive theme and mood in my publication and in my poem, so it is not suitable to just leave it into black and white.
This is a storytelling-like poster, telling how I once was lost, asking who am I repeatedly, but gradually found sense of belonging, my passion and my identity at the end. But I think I am going to pick the one with the girl dancing in front of the bird as my final poster, because it shows most of the concepts and ideas of my poem, and themes.
