This is what I have done for my moving image proposal so far, and I still have to make a storyboard/ plan for my individual project soon. In my proposal, I have listed out the possible ways the I might apply for the moving image I will create in my location, but I still have to sort out whether to apply illustration or how could I apply any graphic elements into my moving image, as the initial moodboard I made could not be used quite well into my moving image, I was wanting to drawing the animations out by hand and edit it as a moving image but then I realised that it actually takes too long and does not have strong relationship to my location, so I will do some more research on the possible methods that I can make my moving image and will make another moodboard to gather up my collections/ ideas.
Week 5- Collected video clip resources
After backing to the lockdown again, we took few days of break but still continue with our work, and our group have decided to work individually for our promo videos, however, we will still help each other with discussing the ideas of our promo videos and sharing our video.
These are the videos that I have made and some of my group mates have made, they have been uploaded on the AUT south YouTube account already, these are the shots that I would consider to use in my individual promo video as well.
And now I will just try to put them together to test how these videos could connect well with each other, I would also doing some research of the calming background music for putting it into my promo video.
Week 4 Moving image exploration/ homework

Here is my first exploration of making the keyword from my poem into an moving image, “Passion”. I used yellow and orange colour as passion is a warm and peaceful word for me, I have also drawn some light and thicken the word as to reinforce how positive this word is. I have tried to use the coloraturas, brushes and the illustration to bring up the warming effect.
Promo videos research
In these three promo videos, I am inspired by their techniques, camera angles and shots, and I think they could be helpful for me to work on my own promo video. I have been looking at few other promo videos but these three are more similar to what I would like my promo video to be looked like.
University of Manchester:
This promo video has apply really strong brownly autumn filter into the footage as its theme is “Autumn on campus”, and there are no dialogue and voice over the video, just letting the audience focus on the footages without any voice over introduction. This video have many establishing shots and slow movements of pan shots, as to let us see the whole campus from a long distance view, and to feel how chill the environment is surrounding the whole campus, I realised these shots could be useful if I want to keep my promo video simple. The background music has also done a successful job by making the audience feel relax and chill, this is also what I like about this video too, it reminds me to choose the background music for my own promo video carefully too.
Camera angle/ shots used:
-Extreme close up/ close up
-Dolly out/ in
-Low angles/ ground shot
-Pan shot
-Eye level shot
-Full shot
Christ University:
This promo video is so different compared to the previous one, it is giving me sense of spirit and I can really feel how energetic this video is, with interviewing the students around the campus and adding voice over, this promo video provides more information to the audience compared to the first promo video. I like how the video likes so natural by showing the environment of the campus with establishing shot, it has used so many close up shots and over the shoulder shot to show what the students and the teachers are doing and interacting with each other too.
Camera angle/ shots used:
-Establishing shot
-Medium close up
-Aerial shots
-Over the shoulder shot
-Tracking shots
-Pan shots
-Close up
This is an open day promo video of the University of Adelaide, it is way shorter than the first two promo videos but it has provided so many information for the audience and I think it stimulated the interest of the audience to join their open day, it used so many pan shots for the transition of the whole videos, I also like the background music of this promo video as it sounds supersubstantial, but I think I won’t apply the techniques of this video into my own promo video because the editing of this video is too hard for me at this moment.
Camera angle/ shots used:
-Pan shot
-Medium shot
-Long shot
-Over the shoulder shot
-Bird eye shot
-Aerial shot
Reflection:
After reflecting from the collection of promo videos, I realised that the videos feel very warm, inspiring and welcoming, making us really wanted to join those university. Moreover, I could also feel how strong and fierce the Christ University is by looking at its video editing. However, I like the first promo video the most, which is University of Manchester’s, as it looks community focused and more warm, natural and peaceful, which is more similar to south campus’s atmosphere.
Week 3-4 Research design canvas

This is my Research Design Canvas focuses around the question about How I can extend my chosen movie – My neighbour Totoro. At this moment I am still exploring some possible methods that I can consider to use for extending my neighbour Totoro. And now I am trying to look for my potential skateholders/ targeted audience and will do a survey to find out what they think about this movie as a different ages of audience. Below are the potential questions I am going to ask my users:
RQ/ Hypotheses:
- What do my users want to see more from My neighbour Totoro?
- Who are my users and how old they are likely to be?
- Which part of My neighbour Totoro is impact them the most?
- What kind of expansion do my users want?
- Will this be global, domestic or targeted to a specific location/Country?
- What can I do to improve or expand My neighbour Totoro experience?
- What are the conflicts/ risks I need to consider?
- What are the expectation of the users?
- What have they gained from my research survey?
Reflection: I think these are some good questions asking myself as a fan of My neighbour Totoro, I could answer these questions really fast as I have the answers in my heart already, but I hope these questions are diverse enough and could explore in-depth of how different ages of users are thinking about the expansion of My neighbour Totoro. My questions are heading towards a quantitive research as I wanted to find out how many users have the same or similar thoughts of wanting to see the expansion.
Week 4 exercise- making moving image using tablet in photoshop

On week 4, we learnt to make stop motion images by choosing typography and exploring different methods of moving them to relate back to the context of that word, I have chosen the word “Dance” as I think it can relate to my personality- active and sporty, I am an active person surrounding my friends.
Using photoshop and tablet to create 5 continuous frames, to create a moving image. I found this experience quite hard and confusing because I was struggling to use the unfamiliar tools to make these frame going smooth, but after asking Tatiana for so many questions, I started to get more familiar with the layering.
Week 3 homework- making different shots around the campus
For week 3’s homework, our group have explored around the campus and have been taking so many different shots using gimbal/ tripod and they are zoom, pan, tilt, dolly, truck, pedestal, dolly zoom, crane shots, and we went to four locations: Picnic table, bridge entrance, design building, waterfront.
Gimbal is expectedly hard to use especially when it is low battery, it always flip around without control, but if it works slowly it is a really convenient tool for taking the above shots, I would have bought it if I have enough money because it is so good for any photographic use!
I mostly have been the model in front of the camera, and sometimes took turn to take videos, I took so many crane shots, truck and pedestal using gimbal, as pan, tilt, zoom shots are only suitable for using tripod to take.
Inspirational moodboard

Here are some collections of inspirational images or graphic elements of how they could related to the echoes of my location and message/ poem. I would like to apply some graphic elements like landscape sketching of my location into my part 2 project, drawing out the location as from my own perspective, using warm tone and colors to show the affectionate atmosphere I feel from this place. I did some research about the digital and hand drawn landscape drawings to see which kind of drawing suits my location the most, and I discovered that hand drawn suits more because i believe it gives more sense of reality to the audience.
Week 3 exercise: analyzing a title sequence
In this lesson we choose the title sequence – Split to analyze, it is a story about a man with multiple personalities kidnapping a girl. We investigated the possible use of techniques, transitional elements, color treatments, graphic elements, imagery, typography, film languages. This title sequence used digital techniques to reflect the guys multiple personalities, black and white color to show the contrast of a normal mind and abnormal mind, but with no graphic and imagery elements, used Helvetica typography and used lots of close ups to stimulate the audience to guess what’s happening in the surroundings.
Week 2 homework: analyzing a short film by storyboarding
I choose the landing to storyboard as I like this short movie so much, by looking at its ups and downs and the tension of this whole movie. I decided to start drawing the storyboard after the first five minutes because I wanted to illustrate the development which is the part that the movie started to get intense. This part is about the dad came into eddies room and told him that he could originally be a good soldier but got kicked out and became a farmer after that, I could feel his anger and how desperate he is still being not reconciled with it, therefore I drew this scene out.
There were lots of close up and shoulder shots in this scene as I think the director wanted to give more information of how the characters were thinking and performing to the audience. There’s no camera movements in the scene because the director might wanted the audience to focus on the facial expressions on the characters.
