Mini presentation of my chosen typeface

This is my mini presentation of my chosen typeface- Bodoni.

The Bodoni font is a well-known serif typeface series that has had a long history of interpretations by many design houses. The earlier versions of Bodoni were considered Transitional while the later versions transfered into the Modern category. The typeface is known for its high contrast between thick and thin strokes which can make it more suitable for a display face rather than a text face.

It was first designed by Giambattisa Bodoni in 1798 and is generally considered a “transitional” font type.Bodoni was a profuse typeface designer and this particular font was actually influenced by the work of John Baskerville, he was a designer whose work Bodoni followed. Later, Heinrich Jost created the Bauer version in 1926 to include a Roman, Title, Italic, Bold and Italic Bold weight.
The Bodoni typeface has been used for a wide variety of different materials. In the eighteenth century it was used in Italian books to 1960s periodicals. In the 21st century, the late manner versions were used in advertising.

Bodoni typeface is named after its creator, Giamattista Bodoni. He was an professional printer who ran a printing-office under the Duke of Parma. The design of Bodoni’s type was permitted by and showcased the quality of his company’s work in metal-casting, printing and of the paper made in Parma.
Bodoni had a long career and his designs changed and varied, ending with a typeface of a slightly condensed underlying
structure with flat, unbracketed serifs, extreme contrast of the thickness and thiness between the strokes, and an overall geometric construction.

In advertising Bodoni has been used in many logos because of its classic style including Guerlain, Elizabeth Arden, Giorgio Armani and the classic “CK” for Calvin Klein.

Dressing the skeleton

I used the elements collect from Macleans park to create these letterforms, they are created by trees, the background of the park, and patterns of the rocks. I discovered that I like to use art brush to create my letterforms more than using other tools as art brush could create more varieties and shapes.

First adobe capture experience at Macleans Park

These are the photos that I have taken at Macleans Park using the Adobe capture camera, with capturing only the textures from there. These images are very useful for making the dress of the typefaces as they can create different patterns and effects when dressing on the skeletons. I will mainly use the pattern of the trees and background to dress on my 3 selected typefaces.

Second photoshoot attempt at Macleans Park

This was my second photography experience at Macleans Park, The weather was fabulous but I have chosen to take photos in the afternoon before the sunset. I have also took some photos with the typography that I could find there, although there were not many words as Its just a park/reserve for people who lives in backhands beach area to entertain and jog.

Drawing my selected letterform

This is a very significant and fun process of drawing the letterform, and this was also my first time using hand draw method to draw out the letters with skeletons, then dress it up. I didn’t expect that I would spend an hour to finish the whole process and I could finish it finally. It was much more complicated than I thought as I got to draw them out perfectly. I am looking forward to design my own letterforms digitally, designing letterforms wasn’t as boring as I thought!

Concrete poem

In my concrete poem, I have put the elements and words that can be found in Macleans park in. I cut out the tree branches from a urban building magazine paper and I cut out the urban buildings from a forest magazine paper. To symbolise everything has changed since I decided to come to New Zealand to continue to study. I had to get use to not hearing the noise from the city in Hong Kong, and adapt a new and quiet life in New Zealand, I used a pigeon to represent myself that I have the ability to fly to another place and pick up everything again from 0. Life wasn’t easy when I first came here just by myself when I was 15 years old, I have also use cloud to represent the difference, the cloud I have perfectly cut out and put upon the urban buildings represents that I was having less responsibilities to deal with and was having less stress as I was still young before I came here.
