This is my mini presentation of my chosen typeface- Bodoni.
The Bodoni font is a well-known serif typeface series that has had a long history of interpretations by many design houses. The earlier versions of Bodoni were considered Transitional while the later versions transfered into the Modern category. The typeface is known for its high contrast between thick and thin strokes which can make it more suitable for a display face rather than a text face.
It was first designed by Giambattisa Bodoni in 1798 and is generally considered a “transitional” font type.Bodoni was a profuse typeface designer and this particular font was actually influenced by the work of John Baskerville, he was a designer whose work Bodoni followed. Later, Heinrich Jost created the Bauer version in 1926 to include a Roman, Title, Italic, Bold and Italic Bold weight.
The Bodoni typeface has been used for a wide variety of different materials. In the eighteenth century it was used in Italian books to 1960s periodicals. In the 21st century, the late manner versions were used in advertising.
Bodoni typeface is named after its creator, Giamattista Bodoni. He was an professional printer who ran a printing-office under the Duke of Parma. The design of Bodoni’s type was permitted by and showcased the quality of his company’s work in metal-casting, printing and of the paper made in Parma.
Bodoni had a long career and his designs changed and varied, ending with a typeface of a slightly condensed underlying
structure with flat, unbracketed serifs, extreme contrast of the thickness and thiness between the strokes, and an overall geometric construction.
In advertising Bodoni has been used in many logos because of its classic style including Guerlain, Elizabeth Arden, Giorgio Armani and the classic “CK” for Calvin Klein.
